Sheriff of Nottingham är ett bluff- och förhandlingsspel där en av spelarna under loppet av en tur antar sig rollen som Sheriffen. De andra spelarna försöker smuggla förbjudna gods in i Nottingham i påsar förbi sheriffen. Sheriffen skall då försöka gissa, vilka spelare gömmer förbjudna gods i sina påsar för att konfiskera dem. Om hen gissar rätt måste spelarna i fråga betala böter beroende på vad som finns i påsen.
Om sheriffen råkar anklaga en oskyldig spelare och går igenom hens påse är sheriffen dock tvungen att betala ersättning åt spelaren i fråga. För att spelarna kan få mera pengar av förbjudna gods ifall de går igenom stadens portar är det dock oftast lönsamt att ta risker. Efter turen byts sheriffen och spelaren som tidigare varit sheriff blir nu smugglare istället. I spelets slut får de spelare bonuspengar som sålt flest antal av olika lagliga gods. Den spelare som har mest pengar när poängräkningen är slut vinner spelet.

In Sheriff of Nottingham 2nd Edition, players take turns playing the Sheriff, looking for contraband goods, and the Merchants trying to stock their Stall with the best goods. The Sheriff can inspect any bag they want, but they must be careful, as they’ll have to pay a penalty if they find the Merchants were telling the truth. This new edition includes updated rules, as well as expansions such as the 6th Merchant, Black Market, and Sheriff’s Deputies.
